Biography of Matthew Hughes

Matthew Hughes, an American rower and participant of the 2008 Olympics, was born on October 2, 1982, in Ludington. He currently resides in Princeton, New Jersey. The Beijing Olympics marked Hughes' debut as a rower in the quadruple sculls event. Prior to this, he had spent three years training with the national team and had competed in three World Championships.

Early Life and Education

Hughes developed a passion for rowing during his first year at the University of Michigan. He found the sport to be new and exciting, and he quickly excelled in it. On his first attempt, Hughes broke the record for a 4-kilometer row at the Michigan school. During this time, he also began training in pairs rowing. In 2004, Hughes tried to join the national team for the quadruple sculls event but was unable to form a team. However, the following year, he successfully assembled a team and focused on pairs rowing in the quadruple sculls.

Olympic Journey

In 2006, Hughes achieved success in rowing when he won a silver medal in the quadruple sculls with coxswain event, although this discipline was not part of the Olympic program. In 2006 and 2007, he continued to compete in pairs rowing, finishing in 9th and 10th place, respectively.

Education and Work

In 2004, Hughes obtained a degree in Business Management with a focus on finance and computer technology from Michigan School. Despite his rigorous training schedule, he worked as a financial analyst in a small Princeton firm. The demands of training and work left little time for other activities. His typical day started at 6:30 am, followed by training until 9 am. He would then work from 9:45 am to 5:45 pm, followed by an evening training session until 8:15 pm.

Future Plans and Personal Interests

After the Olympic Games, Hughes intends to pursue a career as a financial manager or be involved in global sales. Among his family members, he is the only one who has ventured out of Michigan. Hughes is a well-rounded individual with various hobbies and interests. In his free time, he enjoys playing bass guitar, working on concrete construction projects, reading, and even knitting. He has high hopes for the Beijing Olympics and trains with great enthusiasm.
