Early Life and Career

Matthew Mortensen, born on December 11, 1985, in Huntington Station, New York, began his sledding journey at the tender age of 13. In 2004, he joined the United States National Luge Team.

International Debut and Early Rankings

In 2005, Mortensen made his mark at the World Championships in Park City, Utah, claiming 32nd place. The following season, he debuted in the World Cup, finishing 47th overall.

Rise in the Rankings

With consistent performances, Mortensen climbed the rankings, reaching 12th in 2006/07 and 11th the following year.

Partnership with Preston Griffall

From 2009, Mortensen teamed up with experienced slider Preston Griffall. Their familiarity with the Lake Placid track earned them a ninth-place finish at the World Championships, while they finished 31st in the World Cup rankings.
