Maiko Kadi: A Japanese Enka Singer and Actress

Japanese enka singer and actress Maiko Kadi rose to new prominence when two of her songs were featured in the soundtracks of the films "Kill Bill" and "Kill Bill 2."

Early Career

Masako Ota first entered the film industry in 1965, joining the Nikkatsu studio. In 1970, the not-yet-famous but experienced actress Masaako changed her name to Maiko Kadi. The same year, Teruo Ishii cast her in the lead role in the film "Tattoed Swordswoman."

Stray Cat Rock and Female Prisoner Scorpion

Kadi auditioned for the lead role in the "Stray Cat Rock" series directed by Yasuharu Hasebe, a story about a girl gang. In 1971, Nikkatsu transitioned to more commercially lucrative "pink films," and Kadi moved to the Toei studio, where she starred in four WiP films in the "Female Prisoner Scorpion" series, an adaptation of Toru Shinohara's popular manga. These films brought her widespread popularity in Japan. In the fourth film, Toei replaced director Shunya Ito with Yasuharu Hasebe. Dissatisfied with the change, Kadi left the series. Another six films in the "Female Prisoner Scorpion" series were released before 1998, but they did not achieve the same level of success as the first installments.

Later Career

Maiko Kadi has appeared in television series, served as a television host, and guested on numerous television shows dedicated to the 1970s, classic cinema, and the era's music. She continues to be an active presence in the Japanese entertainment industry.
