Minister of Defense of the Republic of Abkhazia (Since 2007)

Miron Bagratovich Kishmariais a distinguished general and military scientist who has served as the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Abkhazia since 2007.

Early Life and Military Education

Kishmaria was born on August 3, 1961, in the village of Djal in the Ochamchira district. He graduated from the Alma-Ata Higher Combined Arms Command School named after Marshal Konev in 1984.

Military Career

Officer's Service (1984-1992)

Kishmaria began his military career as a company commander in the 58th Motor Rifle Division of the Turkestan Military District. He honed his skills as a platoon commander between 1987 and 1989 in the 40th Army within the Limited Contingent of Soviet Forces in Afghanistan.

Service in Abkhazia (1992-2007)

Following his service in Afghanistan, Kishmaria served in the 5th Guards Motor Rifle Division of the 40th Army. He also held the position of Head of the Public Security Department of the Ochamchira District Internal Affairs Department from 1992 to 1993. After the outbreak of hostilities in Abkhazia, he became the chief of staff and later the commander of the Eastern Front.

In the post-war period, Kishmaria held various positions, including Deputy Minister of Defense for Combat Training and Military Commissar of the Republic. He was appointed First Deputy Minister of Defense in 2005.

Minister of Defense (Since 2007)

On June 26, 2007, Kishmaria was appointed Minister of Defense of the Republic of Abkhazia. Under his leadership, Abkhazian forces successfully conducted numerous operations, including the liberation of Latha and Upper Latha in 1994, counterterrorism operations in the Gali district, and the expulsion of Georgian troops from Upper Kodori in 2008.

Other Notable Achievements

Kishmaria has also organized and conducted two commemorative parades of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Abkhazia, honoring the 15th and 20th anniversaries of Abkhazia's victory in the 1992-1993 Patriotic War.
