Early Life and Education

Mia Love was born in New York City to Haitian immigrant parents, Mary and Jean-Maxine Bourdeau.Fearing persecution by the Tonton Macoutes, they had left two older children behind in their homeland, arriving in the US on tourist visas. When Love was five, her family relocated to Norwalk, Connecticut, where she attended high school and later the University of Hartford.

Conversion and Move to Utah

In 1998, after converting to Mormonism and working as a flight attendant for Continental Airlines, Love moved to Utah. There, she married Jason Love and settled in Saratoga Springs.

Political Career

Mayor of Saratoga Springs (2009-2012)

In 2009, Love made history as the first Haitian-American female mayor in the United States, serving as Mayor of Saratoga Springs.

Congressional Campaign (2012)

Following the 2010 census, a new 4th Congressional District was created in Utah. Love declared her candidacy, facing off against incumbent Democratic Representative Jim Matheson from the 2nd District. Despite endorsements from GOP presidential and vice-presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, as well as House Speaker John Boehner, Love ultimately lost by a mere 768 votes out of 245,277 cast (a margin of 0.31%).

2014 Congressional Election and Victory

In 2013, Love announced her intention to run for Congress again. Running in the 2014 election, she became the favorite after Matheson declined to seek reelection. Love ultimately prevailed, earning 53.76% of the vote.

US Representative (2015-Present)

Since 2015, Love has served as the U.S. Representative for Utah's 4th Congressional District, making her the first Haitian-American woman elected to Congress.
