Mikhail Alperin: A Journey Through Jazz
Early Life and EducationMikhail Alperin was born into a family of journalists and music educators. After completing music school in Kamyanets-Podilskyi, he pursued his studies at the Khmelnytskyi Musical College and later the Balti Musical College, graduating in piano in 1976.
Musical Beginnings in Moldova
Alperin's musical career took off in 1977 with the Chisinau State Philharmonic's VIA "Bukuria." He later joined the "Kvarta" ensemble in Chisinau, which blended jazz with Moldovan folk melodies. In the early 1980s, he played with Alexei Kozlov's "Arsenal" and saxophonist Simon Shirman in a duo.
Moscow Art Trio
Alperin's breakthrough came in the legendary "Moscow Art Trio," where he collaborated with Arkady Shilkloper (French horn) and Sergei Starostin (vocals). Their unique blend of jazz, contemporary classical, and improvisation gained international recognition.
Relocation to Norway
In 1991, Alperin relocated to Oslo, Norway, where he has been based ever since. He has actively participated in international jazz festivals in Germany, Belgium, the United States, and Russia, including the "Bogema-Jazz" festival in Moscow.
