Michelle Buteau: The Comedian, Actor, and Podcast Host
Early Life and CareerMichelle Buteau was born in New Jersey to a Haitian father of part-Lebanese descent and a Jamaican mother of part-French descent. She attended college at Florida International University and considered a career in journalism before pursuing comedy. Buteau began performing stand-up just days after September 11, 2001.
Television and Comedy Milestones
After five years of stand-up, Buteau landed her first television role on Comedy Central. In 2017, Esquire named Buteau one of their ten comics to watch. In 2018, Buteau launched the podcast, "Late Night Whenever!," which was named one of Time's "Best Podcasts of 2018."
Film and Podcast Success
Buteau starred in the films "Someone Great," "Isn't It Romantic," "Sell By," and "Always Be My Maybe" in 2019. She also began co-hosting the WNYC podcast "Adulting" with Jordan Carlos.
Reality Television and Literary Debut
In 2020, Buteau became the host of the Netflix reality show, "The Circle." She also published her first book, a collection of personal essays titled "Survival of the Thickest," with Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.
Awards and Recognition
In 2021, "Michelle Buteau: Welcome to Buteaupia" won the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Comedy Special. In June 2022, it was announced that Buteau would star in the upcoming film by Pamela Adlon, playing the role of Dawn, the best friend of the film's protagonist.
Personal Life
Buteau married Dutch photographer Gijs van der Most in 2010. The couple welcomed twins, Hazel and Otis van der Most, via surrogacy in January 2019. Buteau identifies as Catholic.
