Mikhail Guryanov: A Hero of the Great Patriotic War

Mikhail Guryanov, a prominent figure in the Soviet resistance during World War II, played a crucial role as the commissar of a partisan detachment that operated in the Nazi-occupied territory of Kaluzhskaya Oblast. His heroic actions earned him the prestigious title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

Early Life and Career

Born in the village of Petrovskoye (now in the Istrinsky district of the Moscow region) to a working-class family, Guryanov was a Russian national. He joined the Communist Party (VKP(b)) in 1931 and worked at the "Provodnik" factory in Moscow, later moving to a woolen mill. In 1938, he became the chairman of the executive committee of the Ugodsko-Zavodsky District Council of Workers' Deputies (now the Zhukovsky district of Kaluzhskaya Oblast).

Partisan Warfare

With the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War in October 1941, Guryanov joined the partisan movement. As the commissar of a partisan detachment, he actively participated in the planning and execution of operations aimed at disrupting German forces. One of his most significant achievements was the raid on the headquarters of a Wehrmacht army corps on November 24, 1941. Under Guryanov and Karasev's leadership, partisan groups surrounded the former district executive committee building and eliminated the Nazi occupants.

Tragic Death

During their retreat near the village of Ryzhkovo (now in the Zhukovsky district of Kaluzhskaya Oblast), Guryanov and his comrades fell into an ambush. He was wounded and captured by Nazi forces. Despite severe torture, he refused to provide any information to the enemy. On November 27, 1941, Guryanov was hanged by the Nazis. His remains were laid to rest in the village of Ugodsko-Zavod (later renamed Zhukov in 1997), where a bust and a memorial plaque commemorate his heroism.

Honors and Legacy

In recognition of his exceptional bravery and dedication, Guryanov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on February 16, 1942. He was also honored with the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, and a medal. Today, Guryanov's legacy continues to inspire generations of Russians as an example of patriotism and sacrifice in the face of adversity.
