Life and Career
Born into a humble family, Eduard Ogonkov began his football journey as a right winger for the youth team of Moskovsky Zavod Krasny Proletariy. His exceptional talent caught the attention of Spartak Moscow, where he was assigned the position of left-back in 1955.
International Recognition
Ogonkov's stellar performances propelled him into the USSR national team, where he became a key member alongside legendary players like Lev Yashin and Igor Netto. He played a pivotal role in the USSR's triumph at the 1956 Summer Olympics, securing the country's first gold medal in the tournament.
Controversy and Redemption
In 1958, Ogonkov and two other national team players were unjustly accused of rape. The charges were subsequently dropped, but Ogonkov faced a lifetime ban from football. However, after three years of public outcry, he was allowed to return to the sport.
Injury and Triumph
In 1961, a horrific collision in a match against Kairat Almaty left Ogonkov with a life-threatening kidney injury that ended his playing career. However, his passion for football remained, and he dedicated the next two decades to coaching young players at Spartak Moscow.
Legacy and Mystery
Under Ogonkov's guidance, Spartak's youth teams dominated the Moscow championships, winning the title six consecutive times. On August 1979, the football icon was found dead in his apartment under mysterious circumstances that have remained unsolved.
