Early Life and Naval Career
Michael Pavlovich Schwartz was born on February 19, 1826. He was educated at the Naval Cadet Corps and graduated as a midshipman in 1841. The following year, he was promoted to lieutenant.
Participation in the Battle of Sinop
In 1853, Lieutenant Schwartz took part in the Battle of Sinop, a decisive naval victory for Russia against the Ottoman Empire. He served on board the ship "Chesma" and was subsequently awarded the Order of St. Vladimir, 4th degree with swords and bow for his bravery.
Defense of Sevastopol
During the Crimean War, Schwartz played a prominent role in the defense of Sevastopol. He commanded the renowned redoubt on the left flank of the 1st division of the defensive line. This redoubt was one of the most dangerous points in the Russian position and was known as the "Schwartz Redoubt." For his outstanding service, he was awarded the Order of St. George, 4th degree on December 6, 1854.
Further Military Career
After the Crimean War, Schwartz commanded various ships of the Baltic Fleet, including the armored turret ship "Rusalka." In recognition of his continued service, he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus, 2nd degree with crown in 1862, and the Order of St. Anna, 2nd degree with crown and swords in 1864. In early 1866, he was promoted to captain of the 2nd rank.
In the 1880s, Schwartz commanded the training artillery detachment of the Baltic Sea. Later, he served as commander of the 2nd Fleet Crew and Kronstadt Commandant.
Death and Legacy
Michael Pavlovich Schwartz passed away in St. Petersburg on March 6, 1896, with the rank of Rear Admiral. He was buried at the Smolensk Orthodox Cemetery. Schwartz is remembered as a courageous naval officer who played a significant role in the defense of Russia during the Crimean War.
