Michael Richard "Mike" Pompeo was born on December 30, 1963, in Orange, California. He attended the United States Military Academy, where he majored in mechanical engineering.
Military Service and Legal Career
Pompeo served as a cavalry officer in the United States Army from 1986 to 1991. After graduating from West Point, he earned a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. He went on to practice law at the firm Williams & Connolly.
Business and Political Career
In 1999, Pompeo co-founded Thayer Aerospace, a manufacturer of aircraft components and assemblies for the defense and aerospace industries. He sold his interest in the company in 2006, and it was renamed Nex-Tech Aerospace. Pompeo later became president of Sentry International, a manufacturer of oilfield equipment.
In 2010, Pompeo successfully ran as a Republican in the primary election for the U.S. House of Representatives in Kansas's 4th congressional district. He went on to defeat Democratic candidate Raj Goyle in the general election.
Congressman
As a member of the House of Representatives, Pompeo has been a vocal critic of former President Barack Obama's policies on issues such as healthcare, energy, and national security. He is a staunch opponent of abortion, except in cases where the mother's life is at risk.
Pompeo has also been a strong advocate for the National Rifle Association and has supported surveillance programs conducted by the National Security Agency. He has called for the repeal of post-Snowden intelligence surveillance reforms and the return of Edward Snowden to the U.S. to face prosecution.
Director of the Central Intelligence Agency
In November 2016, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Pompeo to be Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Pompeo accepted the nomination and was confirmed by the Senate in January 2017. As CIA Director, Pompeo has overseen intelligence operations and provided briefings to the President and other senior officials.
