Early Life and Education
Born in Nova Kakhovka, Ukraine, Mikhail Zhonin's childhood and adolescence were spent in the city. Despite coming from a non-artistic background, his passion for performing arts ignited at a young age. Exhibiting exceptional talent in dance and musical instruments, Zhonin pursued his dream of becoming an actor. After graduating from high school, he embarked on a journey to Kyiv, where he joined the prestigious Kyiv National University of Theater, Cinema, and Television. Under the mentorship of renowned theater teacher Nikolai Rushkovsky, Zhonin honed his acting skills and graduated in the mid-1990s with a degree in theater.
Acting Career
Zhonin's professional acting career began on the stage of the Kyiv Theater of Drama and Comedy on the Left Bank of the Dnieper, where he played Kochkin in "Laugh! Is Everything Okay!?" He went on to portray key characters in "The Key is Lost" and "Psalm 35," based on Jean-Paul Sartre's play, at the "Atelier 16" theater. For his performance in "Dialogue of Males" at the Free Theater, Zhonin received a special diploma at the "Good Theater" festival.
His breakthrough on the screen came with his debut in the 2002 detective series "The Doll." Though his role was only a cameo, the experience working alongside notable actors like Sergei Shakurov and Igor Bochkin proved invaluable. A small part in the historical melodrama "Roxolana" followed, further enriching his on-screen repertoire.
Zhonin's first leading role came in the 2008 Ukrainian melodrama "Witching Love," a captivating story that featured a stellar cast from Ukraine and Russia. He went on to play the role of Major Orekhov, a Moscow detective, in the 24-episode crime drama "Brothers for Life." The series propelled him to wider recognition and cemented his place in the hearts of viewers.
Zhonin has also showcased his versatility in comedy roles, as seen in the Ukrainian feature film "One for All." However, detective genres remain a staple in his filmography, with standout performances in "Murder in Winter Yalta" and other notable works.
