Early Life and CareerMirbeau B. Lamar, born in Georgia, was a multifaceted individual who made significant contributions to both Texas and the United States. In 1828, he founded the Columbus Enquirer, a newspaper that continues to exist today. After obtaining a law degree, Lamar embarked on a journey that would shape his legacy.
The Texas Revolution
In 1834, Lamar settled in Texas and played a pivotal role in the Texas Revolution. In the spring of 1836, he joined Sam Houston's army. On the eve of the Battle of San Jacinto, Lamar courageously rescued two surrounded Texans, earning him a promotion to colonel and command of the cavalry. He participated in the battle on April 21, contributing to the Texan victory.
Second President of the Republic of Texas
Lamar served as the second president of the independent Republic of Texas from 1838 to 1841. During his presidency, he tirelessly pursued international recognition for Texas's sovereignty, successfully securing recognition from France, Great Britain, and Belgium. However, his efforts to obtain financial support were unsuccessful.
Indigenous Relations and Education
Lamar's tenure was marked by several military campaigns against the Cherokee and Comanche tribes, aimed at removing them from Texas territory. Controversially, he relocated the capital from Houston to Austin. Lamar's legacy in education is notable. He donated 50 leagues of land to establish two educational institutions that later became Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at Austin. Thus, he earned the title "Father of Texas Education."
Post-Republic Career
After Texas joined the United States in 1846, Lamar served in the Texas legislature. In 1857-1858, he represented the US as ambassador to Nicaragua. Mirbeau B.
