Early Life and Education

Miroslav Lajčák was born and raised in Slovakia. He earned a law degree from Comenius University in Bratislava and later pursued international relations at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), where he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree. Lajčák also graduated from the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Diplomatic Career

In 1988, Lajčák joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Czechoslovakia. From 1991 to 1993, he served at the embassy in Moscow, initially as a Czechoslovakian representative and later as a Slovak diplomat. Subsequently, he became the chief of staff to the Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jozef Moravčík, from 1993 to 1994.

From 1994 to 1998, Lajčák served as Slovak ambassador to Japan. He also held diplomatic posts in the former Yugoslavia (later Serbia and Montenegro), Albania, and Macedonia from 2001 to 2005.

High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina

On June 30, 2007, Lajčák was appointed High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina and EU Special Representative. His efforts to promote peace and stability in the region were recognized by both the Bosnian Serb and Muslim communities, who named him "Man of the Year" in 2007.

Return to Slovakia

On January 26, 2009, Lajčák was appointed Slovakia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, replacing Ján Kubiš. He held this position until March 26th, while concurrently serving as High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In 2012, Lajčák was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in Robert Fico's government. He has since held this position, overseeing Slovakia's diplomatic relations and representing the country on the international stage.

Personal Life

Miroslav Lajčák is married and has two daughters.
