Born and Educated in Central Asia

Murat Magometovich Zyazikovwas born on July 10, 1957, in Osh, in the Kirghiz SSR, now part of Kyrgyzstan. In 1980, he graduated with a degree in history from the Chechnya-Ingushetia State University.

Early Career and Military Service

As a student in 1978, Zyazikov was a delegate to the 11th World Festival of Youth and Students in Cuba. He worked as an instructor for the Nazran District Party Committee from 1980 to 1981. He then served in the Soviet Army and graduated from KGB higher courses in Minsk in 1984.

Security Career in Chechnya-Ingushetia

From 1984 to 1992, Zyazikov held various positions in the KGB and security agencies in Chechnya-Ingushetia. After the formation of the Republic of Ingushetia, he became Deputy Minister of Security and simultaneously headed the Republic's Security Council.

Federal Service and Political Appointments

From 1996 to 2002, Zyazikov served as Deputy Head of the Federal Security Service (FSB) in the Astrakhan region. During this time, he was also a member of the Federation Council Commission. In January 2002, he was appointed Deputy Plenipotentiary Representative of the Russian President in the Southern Federal District.

President of the Republic of Ingushetia

On January 29, 2002, Zyazikov was promoted to the rank of Major General. On April 28, 2002, he was elected President of the Republic of Ingushetia by the people of the region. He served in this position until 2008.
