Biography of Nacho Duato

Nacho Duato is a dancer and choreographer known for his achievements in the field of dance. He was born in Valencia, Spain and began his professional ballet education at the Rambert School in London. At the age of 18, he further developed his skills at the Mudra Maurice Béjart School in Brussels and completed his dance training at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York.

In 1980, Duato signed his first contract with the Cullberg Ballet in Stockholm, and a year later, Jiří Kylián accepted him into the Nederlands Dans Theater in the Netherlands, where he quickly became part of the company's life and mastered its repertoire. In 1987, Duato was honored with the VSCD (Golden Dance Award) for his achievements in the art of dance. In 1988, he became the resident choreographer of the Nederlands Dans Theater, following in the footsteps of Hans van Manen and Jiří Kylián.

Duato's choreographic works have been performed by the Cullberg Ballet, NDT, the National Ballet of Canada, the German Opera, the Finnish Opera, the American Ballet Theatre, the Stuttgart Ballet, the Australian Ballet, and others.

Nacho Duato has received awards from France and Spain. In June 1990, he was invited to serve as the artistic director of the Compañía Nacional de Danza.
