Early Life and Education
Nadia Calviño was born into a family of legal professionals. Her father, José María Calviño, was the director-general of the Spanish state broadcaster from 1982 to 1986. Nadia completed her economics degree from Complutense University of Madrid in 1991 and her law degree from the National University of Distance Education in 2001.
Career in Public Service
Calviño's early career was spent in Spain's Ministry of Finance for over a decade. In 2006, she transitioned to the European Commission, where she held various roles, including Deputy Director-General for Competition, Deputy Director-General in the Directorate-General for the Internal Market, and Deputy Director-General for Financial Services.
Director-General of Budget
Calviño was appointed Director-General of Budget in 2014 under European Commissioner for Digital Economy Günther Oettinger. In this role, she played a crucial part in developing the European Union's budget and economic policies.
Minister of Economy and Business
In 2018, Calviño returned to Spain as Minister of Economy and Business in Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's government. She held this position until 2020.
Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation
On January 13, 2020, Calviño was appointed Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation. Her responsibilities include overseeing Spain's economic policy, promoting digital transformation, and implementing the country's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Personal Life and Interests
Nadia Calviño is a multi-talented individual. She is fluent in English, French, German, Galician, and Spanish. Outside of politics, she enjoys classic cinema from the 1950s and cooking. She is also a mother of four children.
