Nathaniel Lord Britton (1859-1934) was an American botanist and systematicist who dedicated his life to exploring the flora of the Caribbean and establishing New York City's Botanical Garden.

Early Life and Education

Britton's parents intended for him to pursue a religious education. However, his passion for natural sciences, particularly botany, became evident at an early age. After completing his education at Columbia University, he taught geology and botany.

Founding of the New York Botanical Garden

Britton is known for his role as the first director of the New York Botanical Garden. He secured financial support for the garden through a clever strategy: naming certain plants after wealthy patrons interested in botany.

Scientific Contributions

Britton, in collaboration with Joseph Nelson Rose, made significant contributions to the field of botany. Together, they described over 100 new genera and numerous plant species. Their four-volume monograph on Cactaceae, "The Cactaceae," remains a classic work in the field. Additionally, Britton co-authored an influential illustrated flora of North America.

Commemoration and Recognition

In recognition of his contributions, several plant genera were named after Britton, but they later became synonyms. A proposal to rename the cactus genus Echinocactus Link & Otto to Brittonrosea Speg. was made in 1924 but was not accepted.

Collaborations and Legacy

Britton married Gertrude Elizabeth Knight, who shared his passion for biology and played a supportive role in his scientific endeavors. His collaborations with Rose and other scientists left a lasting impact on the botanical field. His work continues to inspire researchers and contribute to the understanding of plant diversity.
