Biography of Richard Wettstein

Early Life and Education

Richard Wettstein was an Austrian botanist born in 1863. Little is known about his early life, but he eventually pursued his education in botany, obtaining his doctorate from the University of Vienna.

Academic Career

Professor of Botany

In 1892, Wettstein became a professor at the German University in Prague. Seven years later, in 1899, he moved to the University of Vienna as a professor and director of the Botanical Institute and Garden.

Scientific Achievements

Wettstein made significant contributions to the field of botany:

- He developed a theory on the evolution of flowering plants, suggesting that bisexual flowers evolved from multiple unisexual flowers.

- Co-developed the morphologo-geographic method in plant taxonomy.
