Early Life and Education
Professor Ngaire Woods, born in New Zealand, attended Rangitoto College in Auckland, where she was Head Girl in 1980. She subsequently pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Auckland.
As a Rhodes Scholar, she studied at Balliol College, Oxford, earning an MPhil and a DPhil in International Relations. From 1990 to 1992, she held a Junior Research Fellowship at New College, Oxford.
Academic Career
Woods' academic journey continued at Harvard University, where she lectured in the Government Department, before joining University College, Oxford, as a Fellow.
Founding the Blavatnik School of Government
In 2011, Woods was appointed the Founding Dean of the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford. Her research focus centers on global economic governance, globalization issues, global development, and the role of international institutions.
Global Engagement
Woods has been a vocal commentator on economic and regulatory policy, contributing monthly to Project Syndicate since 2013. In 2021, she was appointed to the G20's Independent High-Level Group (HLIP) on Financing the Global Commons for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, co-chaired by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and Lawrence Summers.
During the World Economic Forum's Great Narrative Gathering in late 2021, Woods highlighted the growing distrust between elites and ordinary citizens, emphasizing the need for global collaboration and a fundamental reset.
Personal Life
Professor Woods is married to American-born Eugene Rogan, a historian and Professor of Middle Eastern and North African History at the University of Oxford.
