Born in Antwerp, Belgium, de Keyser studied painting under the guidance of Joseph Jacobs and Matthieu Ignatius van Brée. His exceptional talent was recognized early on, leading him to embark on a study trip to Italy in 1839.

In 1840, de Keyser married fellow artist Isabella Telghuys. Their shared passion for art fostered a mutually supportive environment. In 1855, his exceptional artistic achievements earned him the esteemed position of Director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
