Nick Pope: A Goalkeeper's Journey
Early Life and Youth CareerNick Pope was born in Soham, Cambridgeshire, England. From a young age, he supported Ipswich Town, where he held a season ticket and trained with their academy until the age of 16. After leaving Ipswich, he joined Bury Town, making his first-team debut at just 16 years old.
Charlton Athletic
In May 2011, Pope signed a two-year contract with Charlton Athletic in League 1. Impressing the club with his talent, he signed a new two-year deal in February 2012. Pope finally made his professional debut for Charlton in May 2013, coming on as a substitute in a Championship match against Bristol City.
Loan Spells and Impressive Performances
Pope's contract with Charlton was extended to three years in September 2013. During his time there, he also gained valuable experience on loan spells at various clubs, including Harrow Borough, Welling United, Cambridge United, Aldershot Town, York City, and Bury. In the 2014/15 season, he helped Bury secure promotion to League 1.
Burnley and Premier League Debut
In July 2016, Pope transferred to Burnley, who had recently been promoted to the Premier League. He signed a three-year contract with the club, and made his Premier League debut in September 2017, replacing an injured Tom Heaton. His performance in the subsequent match against Liverpool earned him praise from both pundits and Burnley manager Sean Dyche.
England Call-Up
Pope's impressive performances for Burnley earned him his first call-up to the England national team in March 2018.
