Education and Early Career
Nikolai Ivanovich Derkach was born into a military family in Maykop, Russia. He graduated from the Maykop School and went on to pursue a degree in economics at the Dnipropetrovsk Metallurgical Institute, graduating in 1975 with a specialization in "Economics and Organization of the Metallurgical Industry."
Political Career
Early Political InvolvementDerkach began his political career in 2004 when he joined the "Labor Ukraine" party. He subsequently became a member of the National Block of Litvin.
Diplomatic and Ministerial Positions
Derkach served as Ukraine's Ambassador to Lithuania from 2001 to 2004. In 2004, he was appointed Minister of Economy and European Integration by President Leonid Kuchma. He held this position until 2005.
Parliamentary Service
In the 2006 Ukrainian parliamentary elections, Derkach was elected as a member of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, on the National Block of Litvin list.
Council of National Security and Defense
Derkach was appointed to the Council of National Security and Defense of Ukraine in 2004 and served until 2005.
Academic and Party Affiliations
Derkach earned a Candidate of Sciences degree in 2004 with a dissertation on "Management of Competitiveness of Integrated Associations of Enterprises in the Conditions of the Single European Space." He has been a member of the "Labor Ukraine" party since 2004 and the People's Party of Ukraine since 2005.
Awards and Recognition
Derkach has received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of Friendship of Peoples (1986), Order of Merit (degrees III, II, and I), and the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise V degree (2004). He was also awarded the title of Honored Economist of Ukraine in 1993.
