Political Career
Yvette Cooper has served as the Labour Member of Parliament (MP) for Doncaster North since 1997. She has held various ministerial positions, including Secretary of State for Health (2005-2007), Secretary of State for Employment (2007-2008), Secretary of State for Housing and Planning (2008), and Secretary of State for Europe (2008-2009).
Resignation and Return to Politics
In 2009, Cooper resigned from her ministerial posts, citing disagreements with Gordon Brown's leadership style. She was appointed to the Shadow Cabinet in October 2010, and served as Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. In 2011, she was moved to the role of Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.
Early Life and Education
Cooper studied American Literature and History at the University of East Anglia. She joined the Labour Party in 1978 and held positions within the Labour Students National Organization and the National Union of Students.
Ministerial Roles
Cooper held ministerial positions in the Department for Education and Employment, the Department of Health, and the Department for Work and Pensions. In addition to her ministerial responsibilities, she served as Minister of State for Yorkshire and the Humber.
Personal Life
Cooper is married to Philip Cowley and they have three children. She is a member of the Fabian Society.
