Biography of Nikolay Braginets
Early Life and Military CareerNikolay Grigorievich Braginets, a bomber pilot, was born in a peasant family in Ukraine. He completed his education in a rural school and worked in his hometown. In 1929, he was sent to the Donbas region on a Komsomol pass. There, he worked in the mining industry as a fitter and eventually became a machine operator. Braginets joined the Red Army in 1931 and graduated from the Leningrad Military-Theoretical School of Aviators in 1933. He then attended a military flight school.
Hero of the Soviet Union
During the Soviet-Finnish War, Braginets served as the leader of a formation in the 60th High-Speed Bomber Aviation Regiment of the 68th Light Bomber Aviation Brigade of the Air Force of the 7th Army of the Northwestern Front. He conducted bombing raids on enemy fortifications, troops, and military equipment, supporting the actions of infantry units. On May 19, 1940, Braginets was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
World War II and Post-War Service
At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War (World War II), Braginets served as the chief of staff of an aviation regiment. In 1943, he completed accelerated courses at the Air Force Academy. Towards the end of the war, he held the position of senior officer in the combat training department of the Military Academy of Rear and Transportation Services.
After the war, Braginets continued his service in the Air Force. In 1956, he retired from active duty with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Throughout his military career, Braginets was decorated with the Orders of Lenin, the Red Banner, two Orders of the Patriotic War 1st Class, the Order of the Red Star, and various medals.
