Academic Career and Early Life:

Born in the Ekaterinoslav Governorate, Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy, Volodymyr Aleksandrovych Butkevych embarked on a distinguished academic journey. After graduating from the Ekaterinoslav Gymnasium, he pursued medical studies at both Moscow and Kharkiv Universities, concurrently engaging in zoological research.

Doctoral Degree and Research:

In 1881-1882, Butkevych served as an assistant at the Embryological Cabinet of Kharkiv University. In 1884, he obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree and became a Privatdozent in Comparative Anatomy at the Medical Faculty. His teaching responsibilities included comparative anatomy, histology, and embryology. From 1886-1888, he undertook a research trip abroad.

Tomsk University and Rectorships:

In 1889, Butkevych assumed the Chair of Zoology at Tomsk University, where he subsequently served as Rector from January 28, 1894, to January 19, 1895. His research during this period resulted in numerous publications in both Russian and international journals, focusing on histology, microscopic techniques, and vertebrate embryology.

Later Career and Legacy:

From 1912, Butkevych held a professorship at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. From 1913 to 1935, he served as Director of the Acclimatization Garden of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Kyiv. His contributions to the scientific community and the advancement of zoological knowledge remain significant.
