Biography of Nikolai Korbut

Nikolai Korbut is a prominent Belarusian politician who has served as the Minister of Finance of Belarus. Born in 1948 in the village of Gutnitsa, Slutsy district, Minsk region, Belarus, Korbut began his academic journey by completing his studies at the Minsk Financial Technical School in 1966. Following this, he graduated from the Belarusian State Institute of National Economy named after V. Kuibyshev in 1977.

Early in his career, Korbut held various positions related to finance and economics. From 1966 to 1969, he worked as an economist for the district revenue department in Lyuban. He then served as a senior economist for the revenue department in Berezino and later as a revenue inspector in the Minsk Regional Revenue Department. Additionally, Korbut worked as a clerk in the military unit 44510 in Pinsk from 1970 to 1972.

In the period of 1972-1980, Korbut held several positions in the Minsk Regional Revenue Department, including senior economist in the revenue department, deputy head of the budget department, and head of the personnel department. He later served as deputy head of the finance department of the State Management Office and head of the personnel and expenditure department of the State Office of the Ministry of Finance of the BSSR from 1980 to 1982. From 1982 to 1991, Korbut held the positions of deputy head and later head of the department of financing the social sphere in the Ministry of Finance of the BSSR.

Between 1991 and 1992, Korbut worked as the deputy minister of finance and head of the department of financing non-production sphere and social protection of the population. In June 1992, he was appointed as the deputy chairman of the State Control Committee of the Republic of Belarus, a position he held until February 1996.

On February 15, 1996, Korbut was appointed as the deputy chairman of the board of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus by the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko. Shortly after, on February 20, 1996, he became the acting chairman of the National Bank, following the resignation of Sergey Bogdankovich.

In February 1996, the permanent committee of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus recommended Korbut to be included as a member of the board of the National Bank. From 1996 to July 1997, he served as the first deputy chairman of the board of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus.

On July 23, 1997, Korbut was appointed as the Minister of Finance of Belarus and became a member of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus. Additionally, on October 6, 2000, he was appointed as the state representative in the Savings Bank "Belarusbank".
