Early Life and Education

Russian composer Viktor Kornndorf graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1970. Although he began composing seriously with his First Symphony in 1975, he marked the inception of his major works with this piece.

Musical Career

Alongside his composition, Kornndorf taught at music schools and the Moscow Conservatory from 1972 to 1991. He joined the Union of Composers of the USSR in 1973 and served as Chairman of the Creative Association of Young Composers of Moscow from 1978 to 1983.

Film Music

Kornndorf's musical repertoire extended beyond classical compositions. He wrote music for several films, including "Ten Little Indians" (1987), "Bubbles of Champagne" (1988), and "The Sea Wolf" (1990).

Atonality and Tonality

After experimenting with atonality until 1981, Kornndorf shifted towards tonal diatonic music. This phase was characterized by repetitive techniques, minimalist elements, and the influence of "new simplicity."

Association for Contemporary Music

In the early 1990s, Kornndorf became actively involved in the newly established Association for Contemporary Music (ASM-2). This engagement culminated in his prestigious Duisburg Prize in the same year.

Canada and Later Years

On May 16, 1991, Kornndorf emigrated to Canada. Despite his relocation, he continued to visit Russia occasionally, notably participating in the "Alternativa" festival after 1997.
