Early Life and Activism
Nikolai Plaviuk was born on June 5, 1925, in the village of Rusov in Poland (now part of Ukraine's Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast). During World War II, he became active in the "Plast" scout movement in Western Ukraine, which was affiliated with the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists.
Emigration and Education
After the war, Plaviuk fled to West Germany, where he obtained a degree in economics from the University of Munich. In 1949, he immigrated to Montreal, Canada, where he became an active member of the Ukrainian diaspora community.
Leadership in the Ukrainian Diaspora
In the mid-1960s, Plaviuk played a pivotal role in the organization of the World Congress of Free Ukrainians. He served as its Secretary General from 1967 to 1969, Vice President from 1973 to 1978, and President from 1978 to 1981.
Head of the Ukrainian National Republic in Exile
After the death of Mykola Livytskyi, Plaviuk became the head of the Ukrainian National Republic (UNR) in exile on December 8, 1989. He held this position until 1992.
Transfer of Power to Independent Ukraine
On August 22, 1992, at a ceremonial session of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in Kyiv, Plaviuk formally transferred the authority and legacy of the UNR to the first President of independent Ukraine, Leonid Kravchuk.
Later Life and Legacy
After the dissolution of the UNR, Plaviuk obtained Ukrainian citizenship on May 18, 1993. He was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise of the I (2007) and II (2002) degrees, as well as the Order of Merit of the III degree (1996). From 1981 until his death, Plaviuk served as the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists.
Nikolai Plaviuk passed away on March 10, 2012, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to the Ukrainian independence movement. He was married and had two sons and two daughters, and lived in both Ukraine and Canada.
