Mayor of Dnipropetrovsk
Oleksandr Vilkulis a Ukrainian politician who served as the Mayor of Dnipropetrovsk (now Dnipro) from 1994 to 1999. He was elected in the first direct mayoral elections in 1994 and re-elected in 1998.
Early Life and Education
Vilkul was born in the village of Nakhichevan in the Rostov region of the Russian SFSR (now Russia) on November 26, 1950. He moved to Dnipropetrovsk in 1963. After graduating from high school, he attended the Dnipropetrovsk Construction Technical School from 1971 to 1975. He then served in the Soviet Army from 1975 to 1977.
Political Career
Vilkul's political career began in 1990 when he was elected to the Dnipropetrovsk City Council. In 1994, he was elected the first Mayor of Dnipropetrovsk. During his tenure as Mayor, he oversaw several major infrastructure projects, including the construction of new roads, schools, and hospitals.
Governor of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast
In 1999, Vilkul was appointed Governor of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast by Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma. He served in this role until 2003, when he became an advisor to the President.
Later Political Roles
From 2005 to 2006, Vilkul served as the Chairman of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council. He retired from active politics in 2006.
Awards and Honors
Vilkul has received several awards and honors, including the Order of Merit III (1996) and II (2000), the Order of the Venerable Nestor the Chronicler (2003), and the title of Honorary Citizen of Dnipropetrovsk (1999).
