Ruslan Knyazhevych: Ukrainian Political Figure and Legal Expert
Early Life and EducationRuslan Petrovych Knyazhevych was born on June 28, 1974, in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine. He graduated from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in 1996, specializing in international law and serving as an English language interpreter. He later obtained a doctorate in law in 2003, focusing on the constitutional basis of presidential elections in Ukraine.
Career in Law and Politics
In October 1996, Knyazhevych became a postgraduate researcher at the Koretsky Institute of State and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Concurrently, he served as an assistant to parliamentarian Mykhailo Riabets. From December 1997 to July 2000, he was an assistant to the chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC), also led by Riabets.
Knyazhevych's rise within the CEC continued as he became the head of the service and first assistant to the chairman from July 2000 to July 2002. He was then appointed head of the CEC secretariat in July 2002.
In February 2004, he became a member of the CEC and played a pivotal role in the 2004 presidential elections. He refused to sign the CEC decision declaring Viktor Yanukovych the winner of the second round, leading to a political crisis. After the dismissal of CEC members, Knyazhevych was appointed to the new CEC in December 2004.
Parliamentary Career
In 2006, Knyazhevych was elected as a member of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) as part of the "Our Ukraine" bloc. He served as secretary of the Committee on Legal Policy and was a member of the "Our Ukraine" faction.
Personal Life
Ruslan Knyazhevych is married to Darya Pavlenko, the sister of former Minister of Family, Youth, and Sports Yuriy Pavlenko.
Post-Political Life
Following his time in the Rada, Knyazhevych reflected on his working relationship with Mykhailo Riabets: "We worked together, but we always had different political views. I have more national-democratic views, while he has others. This is the right of each person."
