Nikolai Vasilevich Veselikin: A Pioneer in Pathophysiology and Biochemistry
Early Life and Education
Nikolai Vasilevich Veselikin was born on December 3, 1879, in Egoryevsk, Russia. After completing gymnasium in Moscow, he enrolled in the St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy in 1896.
Academic Career
During his time at the academy, Veselikin began working in the Department of General Pathology under Pyotr Mikhailovich Albitsky. He later married Albitsky's daughter, Maria. In 1913, Veselikin earned his doctorate with his dissertation on the influence of carbon dioxide on temperature and heat exchange.
Founding the Laboratory of Experimental Pathology
In 1921, Veselikin established the Laboratory of Experimental Pathology at the P.F. Lesgaft State Institute of Natural Sciences. There, he conducted research on the nervous and endocrine regulation of carbohydrate-phosphorus metabolism.
Theory of Diabetes
Veselikin's laboratory's findings contributed significantly to the understanding of diabetes. His theory proposed that the primary cause of metabolic disorders in diabetes lies in reduced glucose phosphorylation.
Academic Leadership
Veselikin headed the Department of Pathophysiology at the 1st Leningrad Medical Institute and later at the P.F. Lesgaft Institute of Physical Culture. His legacy as a prominent figure in the field of pathophysiology and biochemistry continues to inspire researchers today.
