Nina Kennedy: A Rising Star in Pole Vaulting
Early LifeNina Kennedy was born in Busselton, Australia, and later moved to Perth. She attended PLC Perth high school and joined Perry Lakes Little Athletics Club at the age of 11. At 12, she discovered pole vaulting and quickly excelled in the sport.
Junior Career
In 2012, Kennedy became the youngest female pole vaulter to clear 4.10 meters at the Australian Adult Championships. She continued to impress, setting a personal best of 4.31 meters the following year and finishing fifth at the IAAF World Youth Championships. In 2014, she jumped 4.40 meters at the IAAF World Junior Championships, narrowly missing out on a medal with a fourth-place finish.
Breakthrough and World Record
In 2015, Kennedy made a significant breakthrough by clearing 4.59 meters at the Perth Athletics Centre, setting a new world junior record. This qualified her for the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, but she failed to clear the opening height in the qualification round.
Rising in the Ranks
Over the next few years, Kennedy consistently improved her personal best, eventually reaching 4.71 meters in 2018. She won the Australian National Championship in 2018, defeating New Zealand's Eliza McCartney. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Kennedy claimed the bronze medal.
Olympic Debut and Injury
In 2020, Kennedy cleared 4.61 meters, her second-highest vault ever. She maintained her high level of performance, consistently clearing 4.70 meters and above. However, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, an injury prevented her from reaching her full potential, and she finished 12th in her qualification group.
Australian Record and International Success
In 2021, Kennedy set a new Australian record of 4.82 meters at the Sydney Track Classic. At the 2022 World Athletics Championships, she won the bronze medal with a jump of 4.80 meters, the highest ever by an Australian at the event. The following month, she triumphed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, winning the gold medal with a jump of 4.60 meters.
