Early Life and Education
Norman Coleman was born in New York City and grew up on Long Island. He attended Hofstra University, graduating in 1971. Coleman then earned a law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1976.
Legal Career and Political Beginnings
After graduating from law school, Coleman practiced law in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1993, as a Democrat, he was elected Mayor of St. Paul. In 1996, he switched his party affiliation to Republican. He was reelected as mayor as a Republican in 1997.
Gubernatorial Campaign and Senate Election
In 1998, Coleman unsuccessfully ran for Governor of Minnesota, losing to former professional wrestler Jesse Ventura. In 2002, he ran for the U.S. Senate, defeating former Vice President Walter Mondale in the election that followed the death of Senator Paul Wellstone in a plane crash.
U.S. Senate Years
Coleman served in the Senate from January 3, 2003, to January 3, 2009. He was succeeded by Al Franken in 2009.
