Nout Wellink was born on August 27, 1943, in Bredevoort, Netherlands. He studied law at Leiden University from 1961 to 1968 and later earned a PhD in economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam in 1975.

Career at the Dutch Central Bank

Wellink began his career at the Dutch Ministry of Finance in 1970. In 1982, at the age of 39, he was appointed Executive Director of the Dutch Central Bank. He became President of the Bank in 1997 and served two terms, ending in 2011.
