Biography of Oleg Salenko
Oleg Anatolyevich Salenko is a former Russian and Ukrainian football player, best known as the top scorer of the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He was born on October 25, 1969, in Leningrad, Soviet Union (now Saint Petersburg, Russia).
Early Life and Career
Salenko began his football journey at the "Smena" School in Leningrad. He quickly showed his talent and became the first Soviet football player to be transferred for a fee. In 1995, he was bought by Rangers, a Scottish football club, motivated by his desire to play in the UEFA Champions League. However, Salenko's time in Scotland was short-lived. He cited the low level of the championship, personal issues like a home robbery and his wife's pregnancy as factors that influenced his decision to leave.
International Success
Salenko's star moment came during the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where he became the tournament's top scorer and shared the Golden Boot award with Hristo Stoichkov. He also set a record for the most goals scored in a single World Cup match, netting five goals against the national team of Cameroon. Despite his achievements, this turned out to be his last game for the national team.
Club Career
After leaving Scotland, Salenko joined Istanbulspor in Turkey for the 1996/97 season. He initially performed well and became one of the team's top scorers. However, he soon faced knee pain, which started during his time in Scotland. In an attempt to recover, he underwent surgery. However, due to disagreements between the club's managers and medical staff, his recovery process was prolonged indefinitely.
Career Statistics
Throughout his career, Salenko played 111 matches in Soviet championships, scoring 28 goals. In European competitions, he played 24 matches and scored 7 goals, with 22 goals for Dynamo Kyiv and 2 for Rangers. He also played 8 matches for the Russian national team, scoring 6 goals, and 3 matches for the Olympic national team of the Soviet Union.

Salenko currently resides in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he is involved in business. He is married to Irina and they have a son named Alexander.
