Early Life and Football Beginnings
Olímpio Teodoro, known as Dudu, was born on July 7, 1936, in Araraquara, Brazil. His father, João, was also a footballer, and nicknamed "Olegário." Dudu inherited the nickname and grew up playing mini-football. His father's passing when he was 13 led him to work as an accountant and messenger to support his family while continuing to play football with the local club ADA.
Professional Career
In 1959, his uncle arranged for Dudu to join Ferroviária as a clerk. The club had a football team, where he played for fun. However, in 1962, he was moved to midfield, where he spent the rest of his career.
In 1964, Dudu signed with Palmeiras, where he made his debut against Santos. He initially played as an attacking midfielder but later transitioned to a defensive role under the guidance of coach Filpo Núñez. With Palmeiras, he won the Rio-São Paulo Tournament (1965), Campeonato Paulista (1966), Roberto Gomes Pedrosa Cup (1967), and Copa do Brasil (1967).
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player in 1976, Dudu became Palmeiras' assistant coach and eventually took over as head coach in 1976, leading them to the Campeonato Paulista title. He returned to the club in 1981 and again in 1990 as interim coach.
Legacy and Honors
Dudu is regarded as one of Palmeiras' greatest players and coaches. Ferroviária's training center is named after him, and he was inducted into the Brazilian Football Museum Hall of Fame in 2010.
Later Years and Death
In May 2024, Dudu was hospitalized with a hip fracture. He passed away on June 28, 2024, at the age of 87, due to an abdominal infection.
