Oliver Baldwin, 2nd Earl Baldwin of Bewdley (1899-1974)
Early Life and EducationOliver Baldwin was born on May 26, 1899, to Stanley Baldwin, three-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and his wife Lucy. He attended Eton College and served in both World War I and the Armenian-Turkish War, where he was taken prisoner.
Political Career
In 1929, Baldwin entered Parliament as a Labour MP for Dudley, a constituency he held until 1931. In 1937, he inherited the courtesy title of Viscount Corvedale. He served in World War II, rising to the rank of Major.
Return to Parliament and Peerage
After the war, Baldwin was elected MP for Paisley from 1945 to 1947. Upon his father's death in 1947, he became the 2nd Earl Baldwin of Bewdley and was elevated to the House of Lords, losing his seat in the House of Commons.
Later Years
From 1948 to 1950, Baldwin served as Governor of the Windward Islands. He was also a writer and journalist, and was actively involved in politics and public service throughout his life. Oliver Baldwin passed away on January 29, 1974.
