Early Life and Education
Ostap Semerak was born in Ukraine on November 18, 1972. His father, Mykhailo Mykhailovych, is a professor of thermodynamics at Lviv State University of Life Safety, while his mother, Stefaniia Vasylivna, is an economist.
Semerak attended the Physics Faculty of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv from 1989 to 1994. He later pursued a master's degree in political science at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy from 1992 to 1998.
Student Activism and Political Career
As a student, Semerak was actively involved in political movements. He participated in the student hunger strike in Kyiv's Independence Square in 1990 and co-founded the Student Brotherhood of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in 1992.
In 1996, Semerak became the president of the Foundation for the Development of Political and Legal Culture. He held several positions in the Ukrainian parliament, including the head of the secretariat of the Reform-Center faction (1997), the head of the secretariat of the Our Ukraine faction (2002), and the head of the secretariat of the Reforms and Order faction (2005).
Ministerial Appointments
From August 2006 to November 2007, Semerak served as deputy chairman of the Kyiv Regional State Administration for internal policy and public relations. He was elected to the Ukrainian parliament as a member of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc in 2007.
In 2010, Semerak became the Minister of Youth, Sports, and Preparation for Euro-2012 in the shadow government of the United Democratic Forces of Ukraine. From February to December 2014, he held the position of Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in the government of Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
On April 14, 2016, Semerak was appointed Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine in the government of Volodymyr Groysman. He served in this role until November 2018, when he was included in Russia's sanctions list.
Parliamentary Activities
Semerak has been elected to the Ukrainian parliament several times. He was a member of parliament from 2007 to 2012 and again from 2014 to present. He has served on the Budget Committee and the Ukrainian part of the Ukraine-EU parliamentary association committee.
Personal Life
Semerak is married to Orisia Volodymyrivna, a medical doctor. They have a son and a daughter.
Awards
In March 2014, Semerak was awarded the "Fort-17-05" pistol as a personal weapon.
