Early Life and Education
Pat Cox was born in 1952 in Dublin, Ireland, to a watchmaker father. After losing his father at a young age, Cox worked at Shannon Airport during school breaks to help support his family. He then attended Trinity College Dublin, where he studied economics.
Television Career
From 1982 to 1986, Cox worked as a television journalist for the "Tonight" news program. He gained recognition for his incisive reporting on events in Northern Ireland and the US presidential elections.
Political Beginnings
In 1985, Cox joined the newly formed Progressive Democrats (PD) party. He served as the party's first General Secretary before becoming a member of the European Parliament in 1989.
Presidency of the European Parliament
In 2002, Cox was elected President of the European Parliament, succeeding Nicole Fontaine. Hailed for his charisma and intellect, Cox was seen as a figure who could bring a fresh perspective to the institution.
