Early Life and EducationPat Summerall (born George Allen Summerall) was born in Lake City, Florida on May 10, 1930. From a young age, he excelled in sports, playing football, basketball, baseball, and tennis at Columbia High School. In 1949, he enrolled at the University of Arkansas, where he continued his football career.
Football Career
After graduating in 1953, Summerall pursued a professional football career in the National Football League (NFL). He spent ten years as a placekicker, with his most successful season coming in 1959.
Broadcasting Career
Following his football retirement, Summerall transitioned to radio and television as a sports commentator. His debut on CBS in 1962 marked the beginning of a long and distinguished career. He became the NFL's lead commentator for various networks, including CBS, FOX, and ESPN, over the following decades.
Health Challenges
Throughout his career, Summerall faced several health issues. He underwent liver surgery in 2004, cataract surgery in 2006, and hip replacement surgery in 2008. Despite these setbacks, he continued to work tirelessly, balancing his broadcasting commitments with other ventures, including advertising.
