Patrick Kerwin was a Canadian jurist who served as Chief Justice of Canada from 1954 to 1963. He was also a member of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada.
Early Life and Education
Born in Sarnia, Ontario, to Patrick Kerwin and Ellen Gavin, Kerwin attended Sarnia Collegiate Institute and subsequently enrolled at Osgoode Hall Law School in 1906.
Legal Career
After being called to the bar in 1911, Kerwin established a legal practice in Guelph, Ontario, where he worked with the firm Guthrie & Guthrie for 21 years. In 1932, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario, marking the beginning of his judicial career.
Supreme Court of Canada
In 1954, Kerwin was appointed Chief Justice of Canada. He served in this role until his death at the age of 73 in 1963. During his tenure, he presided over several landmark cases and made significant contributions to Canadian jurisprudence.
