Biography of Paul Doumer

Paul Doumer was a French politician during the Third Republic and served as its penultimate president. He started his career as a mathematics teacher before moving to Paris in 1885, where he pursued a career in journalism. In 1886, he became a secretary in the Chamber of Deputies, and in 1889, he was elected as a deputy, continuously reelected in 1890.

Ministerial Positions

From 1895 to 1896, Doumer served as the Minister of Finance, and from 1897 to 1902, he was the Governor-General of French Indochina. He held the position of President of the Chamber of Deputies from 1905 to 1906. Doumer was elected as a senator from Corsica in 1912 and 1913. In 1917, he became a government minister, and from 1921 to 1922, he served once again as Minister of Finance.

Advocacy for a Balanced Budget

During his tenure as Minister of Finance, Doumer fought for a balanced budget and successfully implemented his ideas in the 1922 budget. From 1922 to 1927, he served as the Chairman of the Budget Committee, and in 1925, he returned to the position of Minister of Finance.

Presidency and Assassination

In 1927, Doumer was elected as the President of the Senate, a position he held until 1931. In May 1931, he became the President of France. However, his presidency was cut short when he was assassinated by a Russian anarchist in Paris on May 6, 1932.
