Lev Dobriansky: American Politician and Scholar
Lev Dobriansky was a prominent American political and government official, as well as an influential historian and economist.
Early Life and Education
Born in what is now Ukraine, Dobriansky immigrated to the United States in 1947. He earned a Ph.D. in economics from Georgetown University, where he later taught as a professor. Among his students was Kateryna Yushchenko, the future First Lady of Ukraine.
Political Career
Dobriansky served as Deputy Secretary of State under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009. In this role, he played a key role in the administration's foreign policy initiatives.
Advocacy for Ukraine
Throughout his career, Dobriansky was a staunch advocate for Ukraine. As the long-time president of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, he lobbied American lawmakers and government officials to support Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union.
Cultural Contributions
Dobriansky was instrumental in promoting Ukrainian identity globally. He initiated the annual "Captive Nations Week Resolution" in the U.S. Congress, which called attention to the plight of oppressed minorities in the Soviet Union, including Ukrainians. He also contributed to the establishment of a Taras Shevchenko monument in Washington, D.C.

During President Ronald Reagan's administration, Dobriansky served as U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas from 1981 to 1985. He also acted as a consultant for various U.S. government agencies, including the State Department and the Department of Defense.
Legacy
