Valeriy Babich: Ukrainian Politician and Economist
Early Life and EducationValeriy Babich was born on August 25, 1953, in Brody, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine. In 1970, he enrolled in the Kyiv Institute of Trade and Economics, graduating in 1974.
Early Career
After completing his studies, Babich worked as an economist and senior economist at the Podilskyi District Gastronome in Kyiv. Following his military service from 1974 to 1975, he joined the Council for the Study of Productive Forces of the Ukrainian SSR at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.
Political Rise
Concurrently with his work, Babich rose through the ranks of the Komsomol youth organization. He held various positions, including head of the sector of the Kyiv Lviv City Council, head of the department of the Kyiv Lviv City Council, and department head of the Kyiv Lviv City Council. He later worked in the Central Committee of the Lviv City Council.
From 1984 to 1986, Babich served as an assistant to the deputy chairman of the State Planning Committee of the Ukrainian SSR. He then worked in the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR until 1989.
Business Ventures
In 1989, Babich joined the association "Interinvest," becoming its general director a year later. In 1991, he co-founded the Republican Joint Stock Company "Ukrainian Exchange" (later renamed the "Ukrainian Financial Group"). He has been the president of this company ever since.
Political Leadership
Babich soon became the chairman of the Council of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs under the President of Ukraine. From 1993 to 1994, he also served as an advisor to the President of Ukraine.
Electoral Campaigns
On March 27, 1994, Babich ran for parliament in the Zapadi-Donbas (No. 97) electoral district and was elected. He participated in the first round of the 1994 presidential election, finishing fifth out of seven candidates with 2.48% of the vote.
In the 1997 parliamentary elections, Babich was included on the electoral list of the Christian Democratic Party of Ukraine. However, he later registered as a candidate for the single-mandate constituency № 218 (Kyiv), where he was reelected to the Verkhovna Rada with 13.84% of the vote.
Later Career
In April 1998, Babich became the leader of the "All-Ukrainian Union of Christians" party. In the 2002 parliamentary elections, he headed the party's electoral list. However, the party only received 0.29% of the vote, and Babich did not enter parliament. He was not reelected as the party's leader in 2003 and faded into relative obscurity in Ukrainian politics.
