Early Life and Education
Pauls Kalniņš was born in Latvia in 1872. He studied medicine at the University of Tartu and became a physician.
Political Career
Kalniņš entered politics as a member of the Latvian Social Democratic Workers' Party (LSDSP). He was elected to the first Constituent Assembly of Latvia and subsequently served as a member of Parliament for every session of the First Republic of Latvia.
Speaker of the Saeima
In 1925, Kalniņš was elected Speaker of the Saeima, the Latvian Parliament. He served in this position for nine years, presiding over a turbulent period in Latvian history.
Presidential Candidate
Kalniņš was twice nominated as a candidate for the presidency of Latvia, in 1930 and 1933. Although he did not win the elections, his candidacies underscored his stature within Latvian politics.
World War II and Acting Presidency
During World War II, Kalniņš became acting president of Latvia in 1944. He was chosen by the Latvian Central Council as the Fourth Saeima chair.
