Early Life and Education
Born into a devout family, Pavel Ansimov graduated from the Astrakhan Eparchial School and Seminary before pursuing higher education at the Kazan Theological Academy. Upon completing his studies in 1921, he was ordained as a priest.
Pastoral Ministry
From 1921 to 1925, Father Pavel served in Ladogskaya, Kuban. He then returned to Moscow, ministering at various churches: Vvedenia on Vvedenskaya Square (1925-1929), St. Nicholas in Pokrovskoye (1929-1931), the Resurrection of Christ at Semyonovskoye Cemetery (1931-1935), and the Nativity of Christ in Izmaylovo (1935-1937).
Spiritual Guidance and Arrest
In 1929, Father Pavel became the spiritual director of the Moscow Pokrovskaya community of Sisters of Mercy. His involvement with a "secret sisterhood" led to his arrest in 1930, but charges were eventually dropped. Throughout 1930, he faced multiple arrests.
Final Arrest and Martyrdom
On November 2, 1937, Father Pavel was arrested for the final time and sentenced to death by a NKVD troika. He was shot at the Butovo firing range and buried in an unmarked grave.
Canonization and Legacy
In 2005, Father Pavel Ansimov was canonized as a Holy Martyr by the Russian Orthodox Church. His memory is commemorated on November 8 (Old Style) in the Synaxis of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia and the Synaxis of New Martyrs of Butovo.
The life of Father Pavel has been recounted in his son's book, "Lessons from a Father," which sheds light on his unwavering faith and the challenges he faced during a turbulent era.
