Pavel Běm
Early Life and CareerPavel Běm was born in 1963 and graduated from Charles University in Prague with a degree in psychiatry in 1987. He completed additional training in public health and drug control policy at Johns Hopkins University in the United States. Běm worked as an assistant and physician in various psychiatric and addiction treatment facilities in Prague throughout the early 1990s.
Government Roles
In 1995, Běm was appointed General Secretary of the Czech government's anti-drug commission, and in 1996, he became an advisor to the Minister of the Interior. He was elected mayor of the Prague 6 district in 1998, a position he held until becoming Mayor of Prague in 2002.
Mayor of Prague
Běm served as Mayor of Prague from 2002 to 2010. During his tenure, he was known for his anti-corruption efforts and his controversial attempts to crack down on taxi scams targeting foreign tourists. Běm also gained international attention in 2007 when he became the first politician to climb Mount Everest, a feat that drew criticism for leaving his mayoral post unattended.
Political Leadership
Běm is a member of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) and has held various leadership positions within the party, including Deputy Chairman and First Deputy Chairman. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential Czech politicians of his generation.
Personal Life
Běm is married with two children. He is fluent in English, German, Spanish, and Russian. His interests include mountaineering, cycling, tennis, skiing, scuba diving, and classical, rock, and jazz music. He has reached the summit of all seven continental high peaks, completing the unofficial "Seven Summits" challenge.
Olympic Ambitions
Běm is a vocal supporter of hosting the Olympic Games in Prague, having advocated for the city to submit bids for the 2016 or 2020 Games.
