Pavel Korotkov: A Multifaceted Sportsman and Icon
Early Life and FamilyPavel Mikhailovich Korotkov was born into a modest family in Moscow. His father, Mikhail, his mother, Anna, and his two siblings, Nina and Alexander, initially lived together. The family faced adversity when it broke up, with his younger brother and sister staying with their mother. Pavel, on the other hand, was sent to live with his father's sister, Maria, and her husband, Evgeny Przhevalsky, a professor at Moscow State University. Pavel later pursued his education at this institution, graduating from the chemical faculty.
Football Career
Pavel's footballing journey began as a central and attacking midfielder for the Moscow-based teams "Union" and "Mossoviet." In 1924, he joined "Dynamo" and became a regular in their starting lineup in 1928. He later transferred to CSKA in 1941. Korotkov's footballing prowess was marked by his astute tactical thinking and exceptional work rate. He also excelled in man-marking opponents.
Ice Hockey Successes
Korotkov also made his mark in ice hockey, playing as a defender. He participated in 12 championship games, including six for "Dynamo" Moscow, and 26 Cup matches, 18 of which were with "Dynamo."
Coaching and Administrative Roles
From 1946 to 1958, Korotkov served as the Chairman of the Hockey Section within the All-Union Committee for Physical Culture and Sports. He was also a member of the LIHG Executive Committee from 1954 to 1959. His coaching experience included stints as the playing coach of CSKA, VVS MVO, and the Moscow national team.
Beyond Sports
After his sporting career, Korotkov worked as an engineering instructor at N.E. Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy from 1960 to 1967. He was also an avid card player, particularly prefanse.
Honors and Legacy
Pavel Korotkov's sporting achievements were recognized with the prestigious title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR in 1952 and the Order of the Red Star. His contributions to football, bandy, and ice hockey have left an enduring mark on Russian sports history, cementing his status as a multifaceted sportsman and a true icon.
