Pavel Petrenko: A Renowned Ukrainian Politician and Jurist
Education and Legal CareerPavel Petrenko earned his law degree with honors from Chernivtsi National University (2001) and a Master's degree in Foreign Economic Activity Management from the Ukrainian Academy of Foreign Trade (2004). In 2014, he obtained a PhD in Law.
Early Career
From 2001 to 2010, Petrenko held various legal positions, including Chief Legal Counsel at State Savings Bank of Ukraine and private practice as an attorney.
Political Career
Member of the Ukrainian Parliament (2012-2014)In 2012, Petrenko was elected as a Member of the Ukrainian Parliament (Verkhovna Rada) for the Batkivshchyna party. He served as Secretary of the Committee on Rule of Law and Justice.
Minister of Justice (2014-Present)
In February 2014, Petrenko was appointed Minister of Justice in the government of Arseniy Yatsenyuk. He has held the position in subsequent governments, including the Groysman government.
Legal Achievements
As Minister of Justice, Petrenko has authored and co-authored over 60 legislative bills, a third of which were adopted by the Verkhovna Rada. He has also played a key role in Ukraine's post-Soviet legal reforms.
Opposition to Russia
Petrenko has consistently expressed opposition to the tearing up of the Kharkiv Accords with Russia and has defended Ukraine's position on the Black Sea Fleet.
Controversy
In 2018, Petrenko faced controversy when the Solomyansky District Court in Kyiv ordered the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) to open a criminal case against him for allegedly filing false asset declarations.
